The Zoo Animal Welfare Education Centre (ZAWEC) is the AWEC division focused on the welfare of wild species. The ZAWEC has as main objectives the education and research in the welfare of wild species under human care (zoo & aquaria, rescue centres, other) and free-ranging as well, with the aim to protect individuals’ welfare and enhance species conservation.
The ZAWEC main activities are:
- Organizing and conducting education, training and dissemination on the welfare of wild animals
- Performing research projects on the welfare of wild animals and studying its link with species conservation
- Developing and validating welfare indicators and welfare assessment protocols for different wild species
- Providing advice, consultancy and scientific documentation on the welfare of wild animals and its management, approach and protection
